US LAWNS in St Simons Island is Controlling Sedge with EcoMIGHT

Ever since Steve Mendez, owner of a US Lawns Franchise in St Simons Island, Georgia, started working in the landscape business in the late 1990s, he wanted to find environmentally friendly solutions.

“Most of them were contact herbicides,” Mendez explained. “After I applied them, I found that the weeds would come right back. I was constantly using the products; they just didn’t get rid of the problem.”

When Mendez discovered EcoMIGHT, he was impressed with its performance. “One of my clients had a very difficult weed to remove called nutsedge,” he explained. “In fact, you needed a special herbicide to kill it. I used EcoMIGHT on this weed, and it completely wiped it out. The other amazing thing is that it hasn’t come back in more than two months.”

Although EcoMIGHT is more expensive than some of the other natural products Mendez has used, its effectiveness makes up the difference. “I was constantly spraying those other products, and they took longer to result in burndown of the weed as well,” Mendez said. “When you take into account the frequency and labor required to reapply those less expensive products, EcoMIGHT makes more economic sense.

It’s the best product I’ve found when it comes to a safe, sustainable product. I’m done with the others; this is the product I’m sticking with now.”

EcoMIGHT’s product is a post-emergent, non-selective, naturally organic herbicide that destroys weeds by going straight to the roots. Unlike contact herbicides that only kill the portions of the weeds they touch, EcoMIGHT works systemically. This means it obliterates the entire weed including the roots.

Mendez has been in the commercial landscape industry since 1999 and became the owner of a US Lawn franchise about five years ago. He specializes in native and sustainable solutions. Mendez has worked with the University of Georgia to design and build sustainable gardens to showcase native plants.

“We bring in the municipality and other city officials and show them how native plants can reduce the toxic chemicals we need to use in our environment,” Mendez explained. “When plants are native, they are naturally resistant to things like drought and local insects, which means they will require less care to thrive.”

Using EcoMIGHT in his business fits perfectly with Mendez’s overall mission to care for the environment and reduce the toxins being used.

“I think if you’re concerned about our waterways, aquifers, and water supply for wildlife and humans, you have to use products that are non-toxic,” Mendez said.

“After a while, everything gets polluted. As a kid, I used to hear animals, bullfrogs, and insects outside all the time. Now, it’s just quiet. Something is missing in our environment.”
